How can the city be both a vessel and a veil? How does the city of Tokyo act simultaneously as a cosmopolitan metropolis, catalyzing the fulfillment of one's aspirations, and as a filter, masking the expression of one's own image? The character of a city is a product of the mass movement of its people, but to what extent is the individual an active agent in this process? My time in Tokyo was punctuated by these questions as l brushed up against a staunch social conservatism that contrasted my home of New York City. Through this collection, I aimed to investigate the mechanism by which the urban form of the city and the materials prevalent throughout Tokyo subsume its residents. By means of digital photography, articulated in print form by the collection's publication in studio magazine 001, the findings of this investigation are presented across ten two-page spreads.
